Well I give this review a two star rating. Because with all the research that I’ve done I thought I was ready for this program I downloaded the 10.1 version for Windows 7 64-bit system. I thought I’d did everything right. But I was wrong. At first I couldn’t even open the program. The program told me that I needed (and higher speech program) something I don’t even remember what it said. I am not very computer savvy I know little bit about computers just through trial and error alone. I think I spent four hours just trying to open the program. On Nancy’s website I looked up support after support after supporters for this program and still did not even find anything looked up things on my computer. I tried so many things I can’t even tell you anymore what I did how I got this thing to start running. But I finally got it to start running. The dictation part works very well. I’ve only had it for a 24-hour period. I haven’t figured everything out yet the program is still learning how I speak it works better than the speech recognition on Windows 7. But I can only give this program two star rating. Because when you buy a new program out-of-the-box I think it should work with very little problems I think it should at least work with the most recent Windows. But now that I have it working now I really like it. Still has a few bugs to work out.
PS I dictated the entire review with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I think there was only three or four mistakes the program is still learning how I speak I’m happy with it now that I have it working right.
I agree with the other comments that the marketing of this product is deceptive. It is described on Amazon as working with various Windows programs including XP. I tried to load it and got the message that this product is known not to work well with this version of Windows. When a business sells a product that it knows will not work as advertised this is classic business fraud and deception. Some enterprising class action lawyer should sue Nuance under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act or your state’s equivalent. Maybe even a federal case.
The software installed without errors into our computer and so far it is what we expected and haven’t had any problems. We just need some time in learning the features of the software. We are very happy with Dragon Natually Speaking. The price was very reasonable also. Thanks. Delvene.
I had purchased this software to help someone transcribe a bunch of audio lectures. Of course, we had decided not to feed in the lectures to the software directly due to background noise issues. Instead we carefully summarized the lectures bit by bit orally ourselves and give that as the input to the program. We did go through the recommended extensive training on our voices and pronunciation styles, and we were so disappointed that the software performed poorly. It often picked up phrases that sounded nothing like what we had spoken.
We tried further tests: we trained the software on specific phrases and gave those very phrases as spoken input for the system. The software still wouldn’t recognize them very well, more often than not. My conjecture is that the accuracy rate was less than 20%.
I wouldn’t recommend buying this software. It requires considerable improvement!
I am a radiologist and have been using voice recognition programs professionally over six years. Some of the programs have been very poor, but this one is astounding. I haven’t used the medical version, but purchased this one for my home. It is incredible.
I have tried to trick it with unusual words or phrases but it can cope with anything I have thrown at it. Of course, as a professional, I know how to dictate.
I think that someone who has difficulty with the program is probably dictating words one at a time. To get high accuracy one must put things in context with the program. It needs to be able to put together phrases and sentences to have a high probability of being what the individual has said. It won’t be able to meet the expectations of anyone expecting it to respond to single words, one at a time. If being used one word at a time, it also will spell the word based on the highest probability rather than the appropriate spelling for the condition. For example, if the person dictating says “to” by itself, the program would probably spell it “2″ or “two”, however if the person dictating put it in context by saying “He went to the beach.”, all in a single sentence, it would get it correct.
The person dictating must also get the punctuation in place within the appropriate time interval. If he or she were to say “He went to the beach”, then add the punctuation after a couple of seconds rather than immediately, it might come out “He went to the beach period” including the punctuation as a word.
I could come up with numerous examples of perceived errors which are really not the fault of the program. I maintain that to get to error free dictation, one must practice the art of dictation. One must speak in sentences, or at least in phrases, and learn to be silent between thoughts.
Having said all this, I must also say that in order to run this program with a high degree of accuracy, you must also have a computer with enough power to run it. The computer must have a fast processor and plenty of RAM. You must also have a good microphone and have it positioned well by your mouth.
If used correctly this program is phenomenal. It will be the best money you could ever spend for software.
I get over 99% accuracy. I get accuracy which is unmatched by a transcriber. That is not boasting. You can do the same with practice.
